World Environment Day is marked on 5 June with the aim of raising awareness of climate change and of protecting the environment, wildlife and also our health. The last of these, no less important than everything else mentioned, has been increasingly harmed lately. This year we have witnessed it perhaps more than ever.

Article text

It is estimated that 7 million people die every year from air pollution alone, and respiratory diseases, asthma and allergies are increasingly common. Many famous people, such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Jane Fonda, Gisele Bündchen and Al Gore promote environmental protection and encourage ecological awareness. Every individual can act locally and have a global impact. We, too, believe that anyone can manage natural resources sustainably by following zero waste principles of living (producing no waste), and here is how:

  1. SAY NO (REFUSE) to anything that creates excess waste, simplify your life, use only what you really need.
  2. CUT DOWN (REDUCE) on waste and think about how to use less of the products you already use.
  3. USE AGAIN (REUSE) anything that can be used again.
  4. SEND FOR RECYCLING (RECYCLE) whatever you can’t deal with in any of the ways above.
  5. COMPOST (ROT) by separating organic waste and using it as a soil fertiliser.

You can apply the Zero Waste way of living anytime and anywhere – in the kitchen, the bathroom, the bedroom and in outdoor activities. Cook only as much as you will eat and throw away less leftover food, because this will reduce the 45% of waste that comes from an average household. Always carry meals on the go, drinking water and even coffee in your own containers, and choose ones made of materials that last longer or break down quickly (cloth bags, bioplastics, glass containers, stainless steel, bamboo). Replace your various cleaning products or cosmetics with a single all-purpose one, or better still, make your own from natural ingredients. Walk or cycle instead of driving every day. At Camping Plitvice you can find electric bikes for exploring the natural oasis we are set in. We are part of nature and nature is part of us. So today is the perfect opportunity to get out into nature and enjoy its riches.
