Spring flowers are plants that bloom in early spring, often as early as February or March, right after the snow melts. They herald the arrival of the warmer part of the year, and because they grow quickly before the trees come into leaf and block their sunlight, they usually bloom for anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months.

Outdoor pool during the day: sun loungers along the edge, mobile homes and a green hill in the background.

This precious natural phenomenon, when nature puts on its magical cloak of flowers, is truly a unique thing to witness. Before the spring flowers go dormant with the arrival of summer or are weakened by high temperatures, come to the Plitvice region and enjoy not only them but also our specially tailored accommodation packages, the school holidays, Women’s Day with your mothers, sisters and daughters, early booking offers and our restaurant’s fusion of traditional and modern dishes.

“Priroda” (nature) is a feminine noun

We celebrate Women’s Day by celebrating all the beauty of nature. At the Plitvice Lakes there is a lot that is grammatically feminine in Croatian!

  • Priroda (nature) – Unspoilt and enchanting
  • Voda (water) – Crystal clear and turquoise
  • Rijeka (river) – The Korana, which rises from the lakes
  • Šuma (forest) – Dense beech and fir forests
  • Bukva (beech) – The dominant tree species in Plitvice Lakes National Park
  • Jela (fir) – Often grows alongside beech
  • Orhideja (orchid) – Home to some rare species
  • Velebitska degenija (Velebit degenia) – One of the best-known endemic plants
  • Srna, lisica, sova, vidra… (roe deer, fox, owl, otter…) – All common residents of the park
  • Žaba (frog) – Especially active in spring

Witness the most beautiful spring flowers in the Plitvice region

The Plitvice Lakes are rich in many kinds of spring flowers, and some of the most beautiful are:

  • Snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis) – The first herald of spring
  • Crocus (Crocus sp.) – With purple, white or yellow flowers, it carpets meadows and forest glades
  • Primrose (Primula vulgaris) – With yellow flowers, another common spring flower
  • Sweet violet (Viola odorata) – A fragrant purple plant that often grows in shady spots
  • Lily of the valley (Convallaria majalis) – With white bell-shaped flowers and a strong scent (although it is poisonous)
  • Dog’s-tooth violet (Erythronium dens-canis) – A rare and protected species
  • Fragrant hellebore (Helleborus odorus) – Flowers very early, often as early as February
  • Wood anemone (Anemone nemorosa) – A white woodland flower also known as the windflower
  • Liverleaf (Hepatica nobilis) – With blue or purple flowers

Why are spring flowers important?

  • Spring flowers are food for the first bees and butterflies waking from their winter sleep.
  • They help maintain the biodiversity of forest ecosystems.
  • With their colours and scents, they mark the beginning of nature’s spring awakening.
  • Their short lifespan reminds us to enjoy the moment as time passes.

Like all magic, this one doesn’t last long either, because as soon as the crowns of beech, maple, ash, cornelian cherry, hornbeam, alder, cherry, rowan, whitebeam and other forest trees are clothed in green leaves, they shade the forest floor and unintentionally take away the sunlight that is the spring flowers’ main source of life.

Spring at Plitvice is more than just a spectacular stage

  • There are fewer crowds – Which means enjoying more details and capturing moments without rushing.
  • The climate is more pleasant – Ideal for walks, without the summer heat or winter cold.
  • It’s the perfect opportunity for photography – Scenes of nature worth capturing in a photograph.
  • A “doktor(ica)” (doctor) who heals – It is the very opposite of the noise, pollution, fast pace and technology of the city.

“The food is fantastic! I ordered a steak, because I always order a steak when I want to test what a restaurant is like (and because it often turns out bad), but this one was really good!” – says fitness trainer Andrea Solomun.

“The food in the restaurant is excellent! From Lika specialities to slightly modernised ones, and a typical Lika breakfast – everything is great. Believe me, when this praise comes from a woman from Lika, you know it’s the real thing!” – raves former model, Pilates and facial exercise instructor Jelena Orešković Atabeyki.
